Homecoming Week Delivers Different Results for RCC & RCS

Week 5 Rapid City 11AA Football Recap

The Stevens Raiders and Central Cobblers ended their homecoming weeks with different results on Friday night at O’Hara Stadium in Rapid City. Stevens pounded Douglas 69-0, while Central fell to Mitchell 34-23. Both teams are now 3-3 on the year. Stevens took out its frustration on the Patriots after suffering a tough loss last week, while the Cobblers fell to Mitchell despite outplaying the Kernels for much of the game. Stevens will travel to Pierre next weekend to take on the one-win Governors, while Central hosts the Knights of SF O’Gorman.

    RCC Recap (3-3)

Taylor Houchin once again played an amazing game on Friday night for the Cobblers. The senior playmaker rushed for nearly 250 yards and 3 TDs, added an interception, and knocked in a 48-yard field goal to do everything he could to lead the Cobblers to a homecoming victory. Unfortunately for the Cobblers, his effort alone was not enough to overcome costly turnovers and some special teams’ miscues. The Kernels only crossed the goal line once the entire game while playing offense, but had two punt returns for TDs and two defensive scores. The Cobblers dominated the trenches all night, and battled their way back from a 20-9 deficit to take a 23-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter. However, quick back-to-back scores for Mitchell put the visitors on top for good. Things do not get any easier next week for Central as O’Gorman comes to town.

    RCS Recap (3-3)

Stevens destroyed Douglas 69-0 Friday night to jump back to 3-3 on the year. The Raiders scored early and often to grab a 35-0 halftime lead. Senior quarterback Brock Atkinson threw two TDs, and fellow senior running back Tanner Engle scored 3 TDs to lead the Raiders. Cale Fiero also had a significant impact on the game with two opening half scores. The drudging continued after halftime as Douglas had no answers for the Raider offense. The Raider defense also turned a couple of Douglas turnovers into quick scores. Stevens was undoubtedly expected to beat Douglas, but to do so in such a fashion should give them momentum as they take on Pierre on the road next week. The struggling Governors will be looking for their first win in six weeks.
