    USD FB: Bergner, Simmons earn POW honors

    ST. LOUIS—University of South Dakota football players Miles Bergner (Longmont, CO) and Austin Simmons (Council Bluffs, Iowa) earned Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Week honors for their respective performances in Saturday’s 27-24 win against Illinois State inside the DakotaDome. Bergner was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and for the third time this season. Simmons was named Newcomer of the Week for the first time.

    Bergner’s 39-yard field goal in the second half accounted for the three-point difference in Saturday’s score. He was also good from 29 yards in the first half and remained perfect on the season in extra points. In addition, Bergner averaged 50 yards on seven punts including boots of 61, 57, 54 and 54 yards. On another, he pinned the Redbirds back on the 5-yard line.

    Simmons passed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s win. He entered the game midway through the first quarter and led USD on two consecutive touchdown drives. He threw a 54-yard pass to Tyrstn Ducker to setup a 4-yard touchdown run. He connected with Riley Donovan on a 15-yard touchdown strike on the next series to give USD a 17-7 lead. Simmons made it 24-7 on a 26-yard touchdown toss to Tacari Carpenter in the second quarter.

    The Coyotes (4-3, 3-1 MVFC) are back in action Saturday at home against Western Illinois. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
