SD Mines TF: Hardrocker Thinclads Get Early Chance To Shine At BHSU Meet

SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men’s and women’s track team had an early opportunity to lace ‘em up and compete Saturday afternoon as the Hardrockers participated in the Black Hills State Holiday Classic at the Donald E. Young Field House in Spearfish, S.D.

SD Mines, BHSU, Chadron State, MSU Billings and a few athletes from other surrounding schools were all in attendance to kick off the season. The meet gave the Hardrockers a chance to see where they are at and how their training is going so far as they prepared for the rest of the season.

SD Mines had a number of fine performances on the day.

Hardrocker junior Isiah McGuire had an outstanding day, winning the men’s 60-meter dash after clocking a time of 6.87 seconds, which was just a tenth of a second off of tying the SD Mines’ school record held by teammate Josh Thomas (6.86). McGuire also did well in the prelims with a time of 6.88.

Hardrocker junior Shannon Morse was also an event winner, taking top honors in the women’s high jump after clearing a height of 5-feet-0.25 inches.

‘Rocker sophomore Brad Ware won the men’s heptathlon after amassing 4,151 points (competing in the 60 dash, 1,000 run, 60 hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put).

SD Mines sophomore Jack Batho had a fine showing in the men’s shot put, securing second place after a toss of 50-6.25.

‘Rocker sophomore Jonathan Murray also posted some solid times, taking third in the men’s 200 dash (23.50) and third in the men’s 400 dash (51.98).

Other Hardrocker highlights included: sophomore Jayla Jarnagin secured third in the women’s shot put (36-3); freshman Nathan Courtney was third in the men’s high jump (6-4.75); and freshman Austin Hammer earned second in the men’s 800 run (2:05.99).

The Hardrockers will get back to training and be back in action Jan. 13, 2016, back in Spearfish at the Myrle Hanson Memorial Open.
