SD Mines WBB: Lady 'Rockers Begin Holiday Home Stand

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball team is back home in Rapid City, S.D., playing the next four games at the King Center in Rapid City. This weekend will bring Chadron State College and Regis University to town for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups.

The Hardrocker women head into the weekend with a 6-3 overall record and 2-2 RMAC mark. They fell just outside the NCAA Div. II South Central Region rankings but are currently seventh in the conference standings.

SD Mines split over this past weekend, taking care of Colorado Christian (51-43) on Friday night before yielding to Colorado School of Mines (77-59). The Orediggers have been perfect since conference play starting posting a 4-0 mark in conference play.

Sophomore Sami Steffeck continues to do good things for the ‘Rockers. She leads the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points a game. She is shooting 38 percent from the field and nearly 50 percent from behind the arc.

Fellow sophomore Anna Haugen has also done an outstanding job in the paint for SD Mines. After injuries to post players Marissa Hirchert and Emma Pearce, Haugen has stepped up in a big way to fill the void. She is second in the conference with 101 total rebounds and ranks second averaging 9.3 a game. She also is cashing in for 10.1 points a game.

Junior Taylor Molstad has also provided a spark for SD Mines, dishing in 8.6 ppg and senior Krista Showalter, who plays the point guard position, has done a fine job of distributing the ball and leads the team averaging 3.9 assists per game (ninth in the RMAC).

Chadron State comes into the King Center on Friday with a 3-6 overall mark and 1-3 record in the RMAC after dropping both conference outings in Colorado last weekend, falling to UCCS (71-58) and MSU Denver (56-45).

The Eagles are paced by Kalli Feddersen, who leads her team in scoring, averaging about 13 points per night and has the most rebounds for the Eagles with 70 total. Teammate Brooke Turkek is also averaging double digits, posting 11 points a game for CSC.

Regis University heads into the weekend with a 4-5 season record and 3-1 in the conference. The Rangers sit in fifth place in the conference standings just ahead of Black Hills State (who they play Friday) and the Lady Hardrockers.

Last weekend Regis defeated MSU Denver on Friday (67-51) and then squeaked out a ‘W’ over UCCS (47-42).

The Rangers have two of the best shooters in the RMAC in Majestie Robinson (averages 14.8 ppg) and Mary Sigler (averages 13.6 ppg). Robinson ranks fourth in the conference while Sigler is just outside the Top 10. Shelby Espinosa is fifth in the conference in rebounding averaging 8.3 a game.

It will be a good test for the Lady ‘Rockers to see if they can defend their home court and move up in the conference standings and get back into the South Central Region rankings. Friday’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. (MST) and Saturday’s bout is slated for 3:30 p.m. Both games can be viewed live at: .
