    USD MBB: South Dakota 88, Northland College 42

    VERMILLION, S.D. – Returning to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center for the first time in 11 days, the South Dakota men’s basketball team rolled past Northland College 88-42. 

    South Dakota improves to 12-4 on the season while Northland, who played the game as an exhibition, maintains its 4-6 record.

    The Coyotes shot 60 percent from the field, sinking 30-of-50 shot attempts. Matt Mooney scored 14 points while Nick Fuller tallied 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

    South Dakota jumped out to an 11-0 lead and carried that to a 15-point advantage with 12:54 remaining in the first half at 24-9. After back-to-back baskets from the Lumberjacks, Trey Burch-Manning dished one of his career-high five assists to Matt Mooney for a wide-open 3-point basket. From there, the Coyotes closed the half on a 22-5 run to enter the intermission leading 46-19. 

    The offensive prowess continued in the second half as the Coyotes outscored the visiting Lumberjacks 88-42. Within the second half, Jack Stensgard sank his first-career 3-point basket and Joshua Doss matched a career-best four rebounds. 

    South Dakota outscored Northland 42-12 in points in the paint, turned 15 NC turnovers into 23 points and tallied 10 fast-break points. The Coyotes also outrebounded the visiting team 38-27, led by Mooney with five. The Coyotes tallied a season-high eight blocks led by three from Carlton Hurst.

    South Dakota has nine days until its next game, opening Summit League action Saturday, Dec. 30 against Denver. The game is a doubleheader with the women and is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
