USD MBB: Coyotes add graduate transfer Jay Harvey to team

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota men’s basketball coach Todd Lee is pleased to welcome Jay Harvey, a 6-9 forward, to the Coyote men’s basketball team.

Harvey is a graduate transfer from Florida International with one season of NCAA eligibility remaining. After completing his degree in liberal studies from FIU, Harvey will pursue a master’s degree in sport management at USD.

“One of our goals this spring in recruiting was to add size and physicality,” Lee said. “He has high energy and is a good defender and rebounder. It will be a great fit for him athletically and academically at USD.”

Harvey started 12 of 30 games this past season at Florida International, playing 16 minutes per contest. He totaled 92 rebounds and 55 points while leading the Panthers with 56 offensive rebounds.

“I am excited to get the chance to compete for a conference championship and go to the NCAA Tournament,” Harvey said. “I love being around this team and I am excited to get to work with Coach Lee for the upcoming season.”

The Chicago, Illinois, native has played just five years of organized basketball, beginning with his senior season at T.F. North High School in Calumet City, Illinois. He attended Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois, for two seasons, averaging four rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He grabbed six or more rebounds on 13 occasions in his sophomore season, including a career-best 13 rebounds against Lewis & Clark College.

At FIU, he missed the 2016-17 season due to injury. In 2017-18, he tallied a career-best nine rebounds at Charlotte on March 1, and a career-high eight points at Florida Atlantic on February 17. In the same contest at Florida Atlantic, Harvey also grabbed seven offensive rebounds.

Harvey joins a Coyote recruiting class that includes Matthew Johns, Simeon Jovic and Cody Kelley, and will begin summer workouts with USD immediately.
