What's Behind the Continued Slide of West River 11 Man Football? A Partial Answer.

I’ll make the call. West River 11 man football is bad, and it seems worse than usual.  I decided to look at the numbers.

Let’s start with a team-by-team breakdown of how West River teams have fared against East River foes this season.

    Team

    vs East River

    Who Did They Beat?

    Combined Scores

    RC Central

    0-4

    34-153

    RC Stevens

    52-163

    Douglas

    0-4

    33-221

    Spearfish

    0-1

    0-51

    Todd County

    0-1

    6-57

    Hot Springs

    1-0

    Tri Valley

    24-14

    Belle Fourche

    0-2

    49-62

    Total

    4-23

    313-1049

11 man West River teams are a whopping 4-23 against East River this year, having been outscored by a 313-1049 margin. Is the slide class specific? Yes.

11AAA West River is 0-8, 11AA is 0-5, 11A is 1-7 and 11B is 3-3 against East River teams.  In other words, 11B is holding their own, but the other classes are a shocking 1-20 against East River teams.

With Gregory, Timber Lake, Wall and Colome having very solid seasons one can argue that something ‘special’ must be going on with West River 11 AAA/AA/A man teams.  What is it? Maybe soccer is partially to blame?  Let’s take a look at the current soccer records for West River teams.

    STM 9-2-1
    Spearfish 9-2-2
    Rapid City Central 6-2-3
    Rapid City Stevens 6-3-2
    Sturgis 2-7-2
    Belle Fourche 2-7-2
    Douglas/RC Christian 2-9-0

There isn’t nearly as much West River vs East River matches in soccer compared to football, so one cannot draw a direct comparison. However, one could argue that for the winning STM, RC Central, Spearfish and RC Stevens programs the soccer talent might be drawn for those that traditionally played football. Furthermore, the winning West River soccer programs come from schools that are 0-17 against East River teams in football.

While soccer programs is an easy answer it clearly does not entirely determine why West River 11 man football is even worse than usual.

*Crow Creek, an East River team by a few miles, was not considered in the above analysis as they play an entirety of teams from West River.
