USD MBB: High Point 60, South Dakota 56

BIMINI, Bahamas – Despite 20 points from senior Trey Burch-Manning, the South Dakota men’s basketball team fell 60-56 to High Point in the opening game of the Bimini Jam Friday night at Gateway Christian Academy in the Bahamas.

High Point (1-2) used a 14-2 run to erase a seven-point deficit in the closing minutes to hand the Coyotes (2-1) their first loss of the season.

South Dakota had its offense working early, jumping out to a 10-2 lead thanks to back-to-back 3-point baskets from Burch-Manning. The lead would grow to as many as nine points when junior Tyler Peterson made a pair of free throws with 13:26 remaining in the half to make the score 15-6. South Dakota would enter intermission leading 30-25.

A 10-2 run early in the second half pushed the South Dakota lead to 10 points when Burch-Manning hit his third 3-point basket of the game with 12:12 showing on the clock. But it was a game of runs from both teams as HPU rallied with a 10-2 run of its own to cut the lead down to just two points at 49-47 with just over six minutes remaining.

That set up the final minutes of the game with High Point using the final 14-2 run to prevail by four points.

Jahaad Proctor powered much of the High Point second-half run with 15 points in the stanza after being held to just three in the first half. He entered the game averaging 16 points.

Burch-Manning totaled 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, making 4-of-6 shots from long range. He also led the team with six rebounds. Simpson reached double-digits with 11 points. Brandon Armstrong and Peterson were plagued by foul trouble much of the contest and totaled six points each.

South Dakota continues action at the Bimini Jam Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (CST) against Air Force. The Falcons fell in double overtime to UMBC on Friday afternoon, 77-72. The Coyotes then play UMBC on Monday.
