Big vs Lil' Update and West River Domination

Big vs Lil’ Update and Request for Help

At this time last week the buzz was all about the Spearfish boys basketball team knocking off the #2 ranked Pierre Governors. Pierre then avenged that loss by beating the #1 ranked Mitchell Kernels. In an odd twist to that contest, apparently the stands were ripe with 50 cases of food poisoning. Interesting.

What a difference a week makes. Both the Spearfish boys and girls basketball teams went east this weekend and squared off against Huron and Mitchell. The Spartans ended their eastern swing with a 0-4 record, giant killers no more.

Although it might not have shaken the Richter scale like the Spartans victory, there was a bit more of Big vs Lil’ to report this week as the Oelrichs Tigers beat the RC Stevens Raider JV team 54-45.  Yes, I realize it was the Raiders JV team, but it was still the best team the Tigers have seen this season, and they are still undefeated. Next, on Tuesday the Tigers take on the Class AA Douglas Patriots varsity at Whitehead Gymnasium.  We’ll keep that one on our Big vs Lil’ radar screen.

Another data point in the Big vs Lil’ saga occurred at the Schoolers Classic where the Class A STM Cavaliers boys beat the Class AA Sioux Falls Washington Warriors by a score of 55-43.  Point well taken that the Warriors are a middle of the pack GDC team.

In addition to the Oelrichs vs Douglas matchup mentioned above, another tasty Big vs Lil’ game is brewing on Saturday in the DWU Classic when #1 Class A Dell Rapids faces off against #1 Class B White River. That one should be a dandy.

Finally, in my Big vs Lil’ article last week I mentioned that I could not come up with some good classic matchups from the 1980s.  One reader reminded me that in the 80s and perhaps 90s that the Lennox Orioles used to routinely play the Sioux Falls schools. That caused me to recall that RC Central and RC Stevens similarly would play the Custer Wildcats during the regular season. If anyone has dates and scores from any of those games I would love to add them to the Big vs Lil’ archive, so please send me any information you might have to admin@sdsportsbuzz.com

    West River AA Dominance!

I cannot help but indulge west river fans every once in a while---see the latest poll on the front page. There has been so much chest pounding by east river fans when it comes to being superior in football and basketball that at times it become hard to stomach. This week is west river’s AA time to shine. The Cobbler gymnasts won their third straight GDC tournament and the Cobblers, Raiders and Scoopers were undefeated against the Empire teams this weekend.
