    2012 Twofer Analysis

Last season I looked back at the records to see how common a “twofer” in basketball was. By that I mean how often the same school has claimed both boys and girls titles in the same year. The twofer didn’t happen last year, but before we look at this season it is worthwhile to repeat our history lesson from last season…….

South Dakota did not start SDSHSAA sanctioned girls basketball play until 1975, so the twofer was not possible before that year.  It was a decade later, in 1985, when we moved from the old two class (A and B) to the current three classes (AA, A, and B).

The list of twofer basketball champions since 1975 is as follows:

    Class AA (three class system)

2000  SF Roosevelt Rough Riders and Lady Riders
1994  Mitchell Kernels and Lady Kernels
1990  Mitchell Kernels and Lady Kernels

    Class A (two class system)

1982  Pierre Governors and Lady Govs
    1978  Yankton Bucks and Gazelles

    Class B (three class system)

1991  Northwestern Wildcats and Lady Wildcats

Last week all three #1 seeds in the girl’s tournament won championships. Thus, the possibility of a double twofer with St. Thomas More (#1 boys seed) and Mitchell (#2 boys seed) exists. However, history tells us that there has NEVER been a double twofer in a given year.

What do you think, will we see a twofer, or even a double twofer this season?
