2006 All Over Again In Class A Tournament

I have numerous emails and texts from fans all across the state anxious to see my Class A tournament picks.  Here they are … read ‘em and weep unless you are a fan of the Big Blue Evil Empire aka St Thomas More.

St Thomas More vs. Tri Valley

STM is rolling along at a high rate of speed for a Cavalier but I see no slowing down in this 1 vs. 8 game.  Tri Valley will put up a mild fight until the second half when Welbig and Bergh wear down.  Warwick lights ‘em up for 20 plus.

St Thomas More 56 Tri Valley 48

    Dell Rapids vs. Winner

Dells is not your typical 4 seed and Winner comes up a loser in this game.  Langer, Koch and Schmidt power over Winner and Kyle Mathis.

    Dell Rapids 64 Winner 51

    Chamberlain vs. Aberdeen Roncalli

Chamberlain is balanced without a superstar in sight but they were good enough to take out one of the stars of basketball this year, Darin Peterka and Miller.  Roncalli has a veteran Ross Barton and a lot of underclassmen.  Bertram and the boys pull this one in a narrow win.

    Chamberlain 47 Roncalli 43

Dakota Valley vs. Clark Willow Lake

Dakota Valley is an enigma to me and CWL has the superstar, Skyler Flatten.  Guess what, I am picking the Cyclones to beat Bergmann and company.

Clark Willow Lake 66 Dakota Valley 59

    Tri Valley 63 Winner 55

    Dakota Valley 59 Roncalli 56

St Thomas More over Dell Rapids in the first semifinal in a game many of the alleged experts around the state are billing as the game between the two best teams.

Chamberlain squares off against Clark Willow Lake in the other semifinal.  Can the Cubbies shut down another Class A superstar?

Because I am a fan of nostalgia, I am predicting a rematch of the epic 2006 championship game between unbeaten powerhouses from Clark and St Thomas More … only this time Clark has added the boys basketball powerhouse from Willow Lake to form the co-op that the Clark County faithful think contains the right mix of talent and heart to beat the big bad bullies form the Black Hills, St Thomas More.  Without further keyboard bullshitt, here is the score of your 2012 Class A championship game:

St Thomas More 46 Clark Willow Lake 40

As much as I would wish for a different outcome, I think Tommie More has what it takes and they retain their championship crown.

Without reading this, I knew you would have Winner 8th.

Winner will win no less then 2 games this weekends. Very, very scrappy team.

      Comments before the Saturday games:
Winner is who I thought they were ... not a bad team but like a lot of other A teams this year, pretty good/above average.
I thought the winner of the Clark Willow Lake vs. Dakota Valley quarterfinal game would wind up playing for the championship. That turned out to be true ... I just thought it would be CWL.
Dakota Valley plays a different style of basketball and will be a tough matchup for St Thomas More. They play basically four guards and can really dribble drive/penetrate. The sophomore VanGinkel (Brody) has a ton of potential and if he could develop a floater in the lane he would be a 20 ppg scorer. Brock Bergmann is a stud ... I knew that, the other guards are surprising me. DV plays quick and scrappy defense and offense ... look very tough to me.
Roncalli is playing better than I predicted. I have seen them several times this season and they are very inconsistent ... they are playing well now ... very young, will be even better next year while only losing Ross Barton of any significance.
My CWL Cyclones had a tough first round draw against Dakota Valley and Flatten was limited by their quick perimeter play on defense.
I am still sticking with Tommie More but Dakota Valley will make it interesting with their guards. STM has the definite inside advantage and size advantage and I am betting that Coach Hollenbeck will exploit that ... unless the DV guards make life miserable on the edge for Hensch, Warwick and company ... shapes up as a better game than the semi of STM vs. Dell Rapids.
