DWU: Tiger wrestlers earn NWCA academic honors

MITCHELL, S.D. – For the sixth year in a row, the Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team has one of the highest GPAs in the NAIA.

The Tigers were honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association with an academic team award, it was announced by the NWCA and the NAIA last week. For the second year in a row, the Dakota Wesleyan wrestlers had the third-best GPA in the nation with a 3.26. The University of Great Falls had the highest team GPA with a 3.39, and Shorter University (Ga.) was second with a 3.28.

Other Great Plains Athletic Conference schools to make the list were Hastings College, which is sixth with a 3.14, and Northwestern, which finished eighth with a 3.06.

On top of the team award, the Tigers also had five individuals honored by the NWCA. Individuals who have qualified for the NAIA National Championships and have at least a 3.25 GPA are honored by the organizations. Tyler Sarringar, Kyle Gerlach, Dusty Paulsen, Nick Hutcheson and Danny Hutcheson all earned individual recognition.

Sarringar, a sophomore from Pierre, S.D., had the second-best GPA of the national qualifiers. The 174-pound wrestler is an athletic training major with a 3.96 GPA. Gerlach, a freshman from Mount Vernon, S.D., wrestled at 157 pounds for DWU and is an undecided major with a 3.87 GPA.

Paulsen, a 141-pound freshman, is a biology major from Pierre, S.D., with a 3.52 GPA. Nick Hutcheson is a 165-pound redshirt sophomore from Elk Point, S.D. He is an elementary education major with a 3.41 GPA. Danny Hutcheson, a redshirt senior and an Elk Point native, wrestled 157 for the Tigers. He is also an elementary education major and has a 3.27 GPA.

Dakota Wesleyan finished 26th in the team standings at the national meet and loses three seniors to graduation in May. Eight of the Tigers’ 10 national qualifiers will return to the mats for DWU for the 2012-13 season.
