Augustana: Vikings cited for academic success of athletics program

INDIANAPOLIS - Augustana is one of 24 schools receiving the first Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence. The award recognizes athletics programs with Academic Success Rates of 90 percent or more.

Augustana, a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, graduated 91 percent of its student-athletes within six years of original enrollment. The Division II ASR measures graduation rates for virtually all student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletically related financial aid. The ASR considered the entering classes from 2001 through 2004.

“Achieving a 90 percent graduation rate over even one year in an impressive accomplishment. To do it over four years says so much about the commitment these schools have to the academic success of their student-athletes,” said Pat O'Brien, president of West Texas A&M and chair of the Division II Presidents Council.

The Division II Academic Requirements Committee established the Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence to cite programs achieving long-term academic success. It is not intended as a ranking.
