    SD Mines Volleyball: Rockers finish DWU volleyball tourney with Saturday split

    MITCHELL, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women’s volleyball team kept its record at .500 Saturday after splitting a pair of matches at the Dakota Wesleyan University Corn Palace Volleyball Tournament in Mitchell, S.D.



    The Hardrockers thumped former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Valley City State Saturday morning, 3-1, followed by a tough loss to a solid Clarke University squad, 3-0. The Hardrockers defeated the VCSU Lady Vikings, 25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 26-24 and then the Lady Crusaders defeated SD Mines, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17.



    “This was a very successful weekend for the Lady Hardrockers,” said SD Mines volleyball head coach Tiffany McCampbell. “We really showed some improvement in our level of play and confidence. We need to strive to continue to become a high energy team.”



    Against Valley City State, junior Janelle Strampe was 25-31 on the attack with 13 kills, had 9 digs and two blocks while fellow junior Justine Blade also had 13 kills and was 23-26 on the attack and had four blocks. Sophomore Carsyn Garcia added 42 assists in the win and came up with 24 digs and freshman Jocelyn Mormann aided in the win with an impressive serving display, collecting nine aces.



    In the Clarke University match, Blade tallied 10 kills and was a perfect 16-16 on the attack while Strampe went 18-25 with 8 kills. Senior Rachel Pekarek added nine digs and Garcia posted 29 assists in the match.



    Blade was also named to the Corn Palace Volleyball all-tournament team.



    The Hardrockers finished the Corn Palace tournament with a 3-1 mark which gives them an overall record of 5-5. SD Mines is back in action at home Sunday afternoon in a NCAA Div. II contest against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe Colorado Christian. That match starts at 1 p.m. in the King Center.
