    Augustana Men's Basketball: Vikings picked sixth overall, fourth in the South Division in NSIC Pres

    BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Augustana men’s basketball was picked to finish sixth overall and fourth in the South Division in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll announced by the league office in Burnsville, Minn. on Thursday.

    Augustana earned 155 points in the poll, including one first-place vote. Winona State was picked as the league favorite earning 219 points and 10 first-place votes. The Warriors were also selected as the favorites in the South Division poll, earning 48 points and six first-place votes.

    Southwest Minnesota State was picked second overall and in the south earning 209 points and four first-place votes. Minnesota State was third with 185, St. Cloud State fourth with 174 and MSU Moorhead fifth with 170 points and a first place vote. The Dragons were picked to win the North Division earning five first-place votes and 46 points.

    Augustana was picked sixth, followed by Minnesota Duluth (139), Northern State (133), Concordia-St. Paul (105) and Wayne State (102), who rounded out the top 10.

    Winona State senior Clayton Vette was picked as the South Division Player of the Year and MSU Moorhead’s Alex Novak was selected as the North Division’s Player of the Year.

    Augustana’s Cameron McCaffrey was named one of the “Players to Watch” in the NSIC in 2012-13. McCaffrey started all 28 games last season and averaged 14.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. The senior averaged 29.5 minutes per contest and dished out 50 assists while picking up 20 steals. McCaffrey scored in double figures 22 times and reached 20 points five times, including a season-high 27 points against Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 8. A 6-foot-1 guard, McCaffrey hit 39 3-pointers and shot 42.0 percent from the field. McCaffrey is a two-time Academic All-NSIC honoree and a first team All-NSIC selection in 2011.

    Augustana opens the season on Nov. 5 hosting Minnesota-Morris in an exhibition game at the Elmen Center beginning at 8 p.m. The Vikings will then open the regular season on Nov. 10 hosting Jamestown at 8 p.m. The NSIC schedule will get underway on Dec. 1 against Wayne State at the Elmen Center.
