Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame Spotlight: Barb Felderman (Inducted: 1994)

Coach Barb Felderman was inducted to the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

The SD Mines Women’s Basketball Coach guided teams to berths in the NAIA National Tournament 11 times, including appearances in the Final Four in 1998 and 1999.

Felderman coached Mines to a 434-361 (at start of 10-11 season) overall record, and to a team record 28 wins during the 1997-98 season. She coached seven South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) Championship teams and added Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) titles in 2002 and 2005.

A native of Doland, SD, and a graduate of Northern State University, Felderman spent eight years coaching and teaching at Kadoka and Pierre High Schools. She served as head softball coach at Ball State prior to coming to SD Mines in 1981. She was the Hardrocker volleyball coach until 1993 and won seven SDIC titles. While earning her Masters at the University of Wyoming, Felderman served as assistant basketball and softball coach.

Barb and her Lady Hardrocker basketball teams have held numerous clinics and camps to teach young boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball and teach them the true spirit of competition.

Felderman was honored as South Dakota College Coach-of-the-Year by sportswriters in 1991 and 1998 and has been named SDIC Basketball Coach-of-the Year three times. The Lady Hardrockers have been named South Dakota Women's College team of the year on two occasions by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association.

A former player, Jennie Malone, sums up very well how players feel about Barb Felderman. “Coach has always been such an inspiration in my life. She is one of the most dedicated and devoted people I have ever met. She always makes many sacrifices to inspire and be a good mentor to hundreds of young, growing ladies in the past years. I desire her determination and can only hope that one day I can touch half as many lives the way she has.”

Listen to the 1-9-13 interview with Barb Felderman where she discusses her career:

Special thank you to Mr. Brad Blume (SD Mines) for his help with this Hall of Fame spotlight on Coach Felderman.
