Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame Spotlight: John Dutton (Inducted: 1988)

John Dutton may be the best professional athlete South Dakota has ever produced.

The Rapid City native won a National Championship as a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers in his sophomore season, and went onto 1st Team All-Big 8 and 1st Team All-America honors at defensive end as a senior.  Dutton’s Cornhusker teams won two Orange Bowls and one Cotton Bowl.  In 1981, Dutton was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.

The 6’ 7” 265 lb defensive end was the 5th player drafted in the 1974 NFL draft – the highest draft position of any South Dakotan in any professional sport.  Dutton played 14 NFL seasons – five as a Baltimore Colt, and nine campaigns with the Dallas Cowboys.  Dutton earned three trips to the Pro Bowl, and was named 1st Team All-Pro following the 1976 season.

Dutton’s high school playing days started at Cathedral High School, but he finished his career at Rapid City Central.  As a Cobbler, Dutton earned All-State and All-America honors in both basketball and football.  He led the 1969 Cobblers to the South Dakota Class A basketball title.  Interestingly, Dutton actually received more scholarship offers for basketball than football.
