    DSU Baseball: Trojans fall short to Mayville State

    LENNOX, S.D. – Dakota State could not hold on to their 4-3 lead Sunday afternoon at Westerman Park as Mayville State (N.D.) rallied back with five unanswered runs to earn an 8-4 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference victory.  The game was played as a single nine-inning game.

    Dakota State's two-game winning streak was snapped and dropped their overall record to 8-20 and 1-6 A.I.I. conference record.  Mayville State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their seventh straight game to raise their overall record to 24-2-1 and 9-0 A.I.I. conference record.

    DSU earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning.  Rays Roman was hit-by-pitch to start the game.  He swiped to second base.  Anyelo Roman hit an RBI double with one out to score Rays Roman as the Trojans earn a 1-0 early lead.

    John Pistulka hit a solo home run in bottom second inning the Comets tied the game at 1-1.

    Dakota State regained their lead in the top third frame with two runs scored.  Rays Roman hit a single.  Kyle Holland was hit-by-pitch and advanced Rays Roman to second base.  After MSU struck out the next two batters, Ryan Bourcier hit an RBI single to score Rays Roman to give DSU a 2-1 lead.  Chaz Palmer reached on base by a walk and set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.  Kevin Madera recorded an RBI walk to score Holland to extend DSU's lead to 3-1.

    Mayville State answered back as they scored twice in the bottom fifth inning.  Sam Thielen opened with a double.  Dillon Lundin hit a ground out and advanced Thielen to third base.  After Spencer Mallonee was hit-by-pitch, Bryan Jacklitch hit an RBI single to score Thielen to reduce their deficit to 3-2.  Phillip Steer recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Mallonee as the Comets tied the game at 3-3.

    Palmer reached on base by a walk to start the top sixth inning for DSU.  He advanced to second base by a stolen base and reached third base caused by MSU's defensive error.  Kyle Braun produced an RBI double to score Palmer as Dakota State regained their lead at 4-3.

    Steer hit an RBI single in the bottom seventh frame as Mayville State tied the game for the third time at 4-4.

    The Comets scored four times in the bottom eighth inning as they grabbed a four-run lead.  MSU recorded three hits in the inning, but the Trojans committed two defensive errors. 

    Dakota State could not come back in the final inning as they left one runner on base.

    Anyelo Roman had two hits in the game for the Trojans.  Rays Roman, Flahie, Bourcier, Madera and Braun each added a hit.  Anyelo Roman, Bourcier, Madera and Braun each produced an RBI.  Palmer recorded two walks. 

    Rays Roman and Palmer each swiped one base for DSU.

    Lundin went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a single for the Comets.  Jacklitch, Steer, Zach Mihic, Pistulka, Spencer Kidder and Thielen each had a hit.  Steer recorded two RBIs. 

    The Comets outhit the Trojans 8-7.

    DSU committed four defensive miscues in the game compared to MSU one defensive error.

    Dakota State left 10 runners on base.  Mayville State had five runners left on base.

    Madera started the game for the Trojans.  He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on four hits.  He struck out five MSU's batters.  Drew Sweeter pitched the seventh inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit.  Anyelo Roman (1-3) recorded the loss as he worked the eighth inning.  He allowed four unearned runs on three hits.

    Gavin Biegler was the starting pitcher on the mound for the Comets.  He worked for two-plus innings and allowed three runs on three hits.  Pistulka tossed three innings in relief and limited the Trojans to one hit.  Kidder pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits.  Victor Sokolofsky (6-0) picked up the victory as he tossed a one-hitter in two innings.

    Pistulka, Kidder and Sokolofsky each recorded three strikeouts for Mayville State.

    Dakota State is scheduled to play their first home game of the season Monday afternoon.  The Trojans welcome Morningside (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).  First pitch at the Flynn Field is set for 3 p.m.
