USD Softball: Omaha 1-6, South Dakota 0-3

VERMILLION, S.D.—Omaha pitchers Dana Elsasser and Ashton Hughes limited South Dakota to nine hits and three runs in earning a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at Nygaard Field. Scores went 1-0 and 6-3.

Elsasser (19-5) threw her 11th shutout of the season and struck out six in the opener. She retired the first 11 batters she faced and allowed just one runner to advance past first base. All four hits she surrendered were singles.

South Dakota pitcher Erica Denney (14-7) went the distance for the Coyotes (25-16, 8-5 Summit), but was the hard-luck loser of game one. A one-out walk, an errant throw to first base and a sacrifice fly by Campbell Ditto in the top of third produced the only run of the game. Denney gave up six hits, had four strikeouts and walked five.

Third baseman Molly Negrete plated Omaha’s first three runs of game two and finished 3-for-7 on the day. She made it 1-0 in the first inning with a two-out single to right that scored Allie Mathewson, who led off the game with a base hit. Negrete’s two-out triple to right center field scored two and made it 3-1 Mavs. The only extra-base hits for Omaha Tuesday came from Negrete.

Matley Jones’ fourth home run of the season cut Omaha’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Omaha (32-5, 10-1) tacked on three runs in the sixth that made it 6-2. Amber Lutmer’s two-out, two-run single was the big blow in the inning. Coyote catcher Allie Daly doubled in Lindsey Boyd in the bottom of the sixth for the final run of the game.

Hughes (8-0) allowed three runs on five hits in staying unbeaten on the season. She struck out 11 hitters and walked two. Madison Frain (6-8) started the nightcap for USD and worked into the sixth inning before giving way to Missy Blackburn.

Game three of the series is slated for 2 p.m. Wednesday.
