    USD Track: Haase records top-five, women 4x1600 sets new USD record at Drake

    DES MOINES, Iowa – Coyote distance runner Brant Haase recorded a fifth-place finish in the men’s 10,000-meters and the South Dakota women’s 4x1600-meter relay team set a new school record while placing ninth at the Drake Relays on Thursday afternoon. 

    Haase, a freshman, set a career-best time of 29 minutes, 55.69 seconds in his race, which ranks second in the Summit League. His previous best time this season was 31:28.51. Mubarik Musa finished 14th with a career-best 30:39.93 (fourth-best time in Summit League), Ethan Marquardt was 29th at 31:21.56 and Benson Langat was 36th with a career-best 32:34.10.

    The women’s 4x1600 team of Katie Wetzstein, Amber Eichkorn, Britni Waller, and Kristen Steffen finished its relay in 20:26.57, breaking the previous record of 20:39.43 set last season.

    Distance runner Megan Hilson had a career-best performance in the women’s 10,000 with a time of 37:11.10. She finished 24th while Ali Gress finished 25th at 37:11.95. 

    Josh Petersen rounded out USD’s finishes with a 13th–place finish in the men’s decathlon with 5,289 points.

    South Dakota will continue competition at the Drake Relays and will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College on Friday.
