USD basketball to play doubleheader in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D.—University of South Dakota women’s and men’s basketball will host a doubleheader against South Dakota School of Mines and University of Wyoming, respectively, on Dec. 7 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City. USD Director of Athletics David Herbster made the announcement from the Civic Center Friday alongside The Rapid City Convention & Visitors Bureau, which is sponsoring the event.

“Rapid City is an event town and bringing Division I basketball to Rapid City will not only help USD, but it is going to help West River experience our brand of basketball,” said Herbster. “We are taking a home game away, but we will be placing our team in an incredible setting. It will be an experience they remember for a long time.”

The South Dakota women and the School of Mines will tip off at 5 p.m. The South Dakota men and Wyoming will follow at 7:15 p.m. The Coyotes and Lady HardRockers will meet for the first time. The Coyotes and Cowboys will meet for the fifth year in a row. Tickets for the event will go on sale at a later date.

“We are looking forward to playing in a great venue and in front of fans and our alumni who support us, but may not get many chances to see us play,” said USD head men’s basketball coach Dave Boots. “Wyoming is a quality opponent and I know this will be a great experience for our team.”

USD head women’s basketball coach Amy Williams is a native of Spearfish, S.D., which sits 45 minutes to the northwest of Rapid City. She will be in her second season at the helm of the Coyotes after leading the team to a runner-up finish at the Summit League Tournament and a Final Four appearance in the WBI.

“We are excited for Coyote women’s basketball to be a part of this event in Rapid City,” said Williams. “The Black Hills are home to me and I am eager to return and to allow our student-athletes to experience this side of the state.”
