Chesney Nagel (Avon) Signs with Tigers!

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball coach Jason Christensen recently wrapped up recruiting for the 2013-14 season, but he already has a head start on his recruiting class for 2014-15.

Christensen, who begins his fourth year with the Tiger women’s basketball program this fall, announced Tuesday afternoon that Avon High School standout Chesney Nagel will join the program starting in the fall of 2014. She is the first signee for the 2014-15 season, and gets Christensen’s recruiting class off to a solid start.

Nagel comes to the Tigers after a three-year career for the Pirate varsity basketball team. She earned three varsity letters and started for three years for coach Brad Poppe. As a junior in 2012-13, she averaged 20.2 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game while shooting 36 percent from the field. The 5-foot-8 guard earned all-conference first team and Class B All-State Second Team honors as a junior.

Nagel also earned second team all-conference accolades as a freshman and sophomore. She qualified for the International Science and Engineering Fair in 2013 and earned the Governor’s Leadership Excellence Award in 2012. Nagel, who is a member of the Merit Honor Roll, was an All-American Scholar and a National Science Merit Award winner in 2011.

“Chesney is a good fit for us at Dakota Wesleyan both academically and basketball-wise,” Christensen said. “She has a good basketball IQ and is a model scholar-athlete in the classroom.”

The Tigers start the 2013-14 season Nov. 1 and 2 at the Doane Classic in Crete, Neb.
