BHSU Volleyball: Metro State wins in four, 3-1

SPEARFISH, S.D. – As the home opening weekend of the fall season continued for the Black Hills State University athletic programs, it was the volleyball team who took the court to face the Metro State Roadrunners (6-4, 2-0 RMAC) on Saturday, Sept. 21 from the Young Center.

After a tough first set that saw the Roadrunners come out hot to win 25-13, the Jackets answered back to win 25-20 in set two to even the match.  However, Metro took the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-13, to secure their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on the season.

Metro's leaders on the night in the scoring department were Lauren Quijano with 15 kills on 31 attacks (.471 hitting-percentage) and Kylie Haun who finished with 12 kills.

Betty Van Lith led the match with 37 assists, while Yellow Jackets true freshman setter, Brynn Eckhardt, was close behind with 35 assists on the night.

Senior hitter who led the way for the Jackets was Caitlin Templeton, who finished with 14 kills on 35 attacks (.229), while fellow senior Amy O'Neill continued to power home points after 14 kills and 15 digs.

Kelsey Olson, the Jackets' libero, ended the night with 17 kills as Holly Hamlin and Meghan Sipe combined for 10 more kills and eight more digs.

In the second set and the Yellow Jackets only set win on the night, BHSU hit for a match best .348 average while going 12-of-23 on total attacks.  Meanwhile, the Roadrunners set the tone early as they turned in a match best .440 average in the first set.

Late match consistency was the answer for metro as they hit for an average of .308 as a team in set three before closing out the match while hitting .296 in the fourth set.

The next match for the Yellow Jackets in a trip to Chadron State on Tuesday, Sept. 24th at 6:00 p.m. MT.
