USF Women's Basketball: Cougars Rely on Shooting from Deep to Defeat Huskies

ST. CLOUD, MINN. (January 11, 2014)- For the first time this season, the Cougars (7-7, 3-7 NSIC) shot above 45% from the field as they defeated the Huskies (9-5, 5-5 NSIC) 92-79. The Cougars also performed significantly better than their season average of 30.1% from three-point land as they shot 51.7% from behind the arc against St. Cloud State.

The Huskies built a five point lead just over six minutes into the game when Sam Price converted a steal into two points on the fast break.

The Cougars then stormed back with an impressive 29-7 run which was capped off with three straight three-point shots which were hit by Bailey Bouman and Jaicee Ulmer. The three-point shots gave USF a 36-19 lead with just under four minutes left in the first half.

SCSU then then cut the Cougar lead down to eight points when Lexy Petermann hit a three-point shot with 1:40 left in the half. USF then took a 40-30 lead into the locker room when Jaicee Ulmer hit a jumper with 33 seconds left in the first period.

The Cougars then extended their lead to sixteen points when Jaicee Ulmer hit a three-point shot with just over 15 minutes left in the game.

The Huskies closed the gap down to seven points against the Cougars with just over two minutes left, but it was too little too late as USF went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe in the last 1:30 of the game. USF came away from the game with a 92-79 victory, coming away with their first victory in their last four attempts.

The Cougars had five players score in double-digits, led by Laura Johnson who dropped 20 points.

Bailey Bouman also came up big for USF as she scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists coming off the bench for the Cougars.

St. Cloud State’s Jessica Benson led all scorers with 25 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Huskies.

The Cougars will compete next against Upper Iowa and Winona State this upcoming weekend at the Stewart Center.
