    USD Football: Coyotes hand out team awards

    VERMILLION, S.D.—Senior linebacker Tyler Starr and sophomore quarterback Kevin Earl were among the award recipients at the 2013 University of South Dakota Football Awards Show held Saturday in the ballroom of the Muenster University Center.

    Starr was named Henry Heider Most Valuable Player and, for the second year in a row, was named Joe Salem Defensive Player of the Year. Starr led the Coyotes with nine sacks and 15 tackles-for-loss, and was second on the team with 71 tackles.

    Earl was named Dave Triplett Offensive Player of the Year. Earl started the final eight games of the season and passed for 1,920 yards and nine touchdowns. He also tied the team lead in rushing touchdowns with three.

    Senior wide receiver Austin Koch was named Beanie Cooper Special Teams Player of the Year after tying for the team lead in special teams tackles with eight in nine games. Koch also caught eight passes this season for 102 yards.

    Wide receiver Riley Donovan was named Harry Gamage Most Valuable Freshman after leading the team in receiving with 553 yards on 31 catches and scoring two touchdowns. Junior teammate Josh Vander Maten received the Coaches Award for making the transition from starting quarterback to starting wide receiver. Senior center Cody O’Neill and senior defensive end Emilious Davis were both honored as Tim McFarland Linemen of the Year.

    First-year offensive lineman Stetson Dagel received the Offensive Scout Player of the Year award and sophomore defensive back Jacob Warner received Defensive Scout Player of the Year.

    Sophomore linebacker Keyen Lage garnered the Tim Mojzik Bulldog Award, which is chosen by members of the football team to honor the person best exemplifying the attributes of tenacity, courage, endurance and fortitude. Lage was fourth on the team with 67 tackles and had four sacks, 12 tackles-for-loss and two interceptions.
