Augustana Tennis: No. 30 Vikings roll over MSU Moorhead 9-0 on Friday night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 30 Augustana remained perfect in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition, taking down MSU Moorhead 9-0 on Friday night. The Vikings improve to 16-1 on the season with a 9-0 mark in NSIC competition while the Dragons fall to 4-8, 3-4 in the NSIC.

The Vikings cruised in doubles play, winning all three matches by at least five games. Katie Jesperson and Jessa Richards lived up to their No. 2 ranking in the Central Region, dispatching the top MSUM pairing 8-1.

Jenna Helleberg and Meredith Lawrence quickly gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Heather Sullivan and Liz Lewis then completed the doubles sweep for Augustana, winning 8-2 in the third flight.

Singles action saw the Vikings dominate much like the opening three matches, beginning with Jesperson’s second-straight 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Richards provided the team match-clinching win with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the second-flight singles match.

Francesca Beg battled a sluggish start but after earning a late break in the first set, she rolled in the second for a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3. Helleberg answered her opponent’s heavy-lob game for a 6-1, 6-2 win in the fourth slot.

Keeping her dominating singles play up, Lawrence coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Putting the finishing touches on the team sweep, Sullivan earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

The Vikings finish their four-match home stand on Sunday morning when they take on Winona State at 9 a.m.
