BHSU Softball: Jackets close season with another win over WNMU

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Yellow Jacket softball team ended their season with their second consecutive victory for the first time this year win a 6-5 win at Western New Mexico University in game one on Sunday before losing to Adams State University, 8-3.

The team closed out their season with an overall record of 4-35 overall and 3-27 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.  BHSU went 2-13 at home and had a record of 2-17, while having a total of 16 games cancelled due to weather in 2014.

    GAME 1

Stefanie Witman picked up her first victory in the circle for the Jackets as she pitched four innings and gave up just one earned run on six WNMU hits.  Sophomore pitcher, Kaitlin Farrar, closed out the game in the final three innings to pick up her first save of the season after surrendering only four hits and one earned run to go with a strikeout.

After a scoreless first couple of innings to begin the morning game on Sunday, the Jackets got on the board twice in the third inning to take the lead when LF Nia Shumpert scored on a wild pitch.  A batter later, 2B Katie Campo picked up her 27th RBI after a single that allowed CF Brooke Grant to score.

The Jackets went up 5-0 after 1B Rebecca Green hit a three-run homer in the next inning over the left field fence.  WNMU did respond in the bottom half of the fourth for three runs of their own to get within two runs, 5-3.

WNMU managed to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth before Farrar closed the game out for the victory.

    GAME 2

In the second game of the day and final outing for BHSU, ASU came out firing and scored four runs in the first inning for the early lead.  They went up 5-0 in the second before the Yellow Jackets responded with three runs to make the score, 5-3, after the first two innings.

SS Ryan Cook scored the first run of the second inning on an ASU wild pitch before fellow senior catcher, Sara Schmid, hit a two-run homerun to center field that knocked home 3B Alexis Shaffer.  Schmid finished her BHSU career with a perfect, 3-for-3 performance at the plate with the two RBIs.

Schmid's homer would be the last time the Jackets scored in the game as ASU went onto score one run in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to close the game.

Pitching for ASU was Lauren Murphy Payne who went 5.1 innings and gave up three earned runs on nine Yellow Jacket hits.  Stefanie Witman went all seven innings for the Jackets while giving up all eight runs to go with her five strikeouts in the game.
