    • YOU ARE "ALL THAT"

It's the end of the basketball season for the St. Thomas More Cavaliers, and what a season it was!!   They managed to accomplish what no other West River team has been able to do, and they did it in an impressive way.   The STM Lady Cavs had an outstanding run at State A and came home with a championship.  Anyone who follows these girls no doubt has witnessed how v...

    • THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMMMM.............

Regular season is now over for all boys and girls basketball teams in South Dakota, and a few teams have punched their ticket to the State Tournament and some still hoping they have a chance.    There have been some great games and some very poor games throughout the season, and I expect to witness the same at State, but along the way there are some things that have made me go hmmmmmmm and I ...

    • SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!

There are a couple of games left in the season for girls basketball before the start of playoffs, and my previous thoughts on team standings seem to be shifting.  To my surprise Central lost last night to Sturgis, and Stevens beat Spearfish, so now I'm left to rethink the "big" game now between Central and Stevens tomorrow night.   Most might be surprised that I am surprised that Cent...

    • WAGERS ANYONE??

When girls basketball becomes topic of conversation in Rapid City, the rivalry between Central and Stevens is always up for discussion.  Who has the stronger team, who will come up with the win, etc.   Well, the clash of the two AA schools played out last night on Stevens' home court, and the home team did not come out on top.   The talk around the water cooler has...

    • TEAMWORK OR BUST

Go Packers!!   Yeah, I have to admit that I've been distracted by the football playoffs and the road to the Super Bowl these last few weeks that I almost forgot that basketball was going on across the state and elsewhere.   The season is nearly half over, so I thought I better get serious about my second favorite sport.......  West River girls’ basketball h...

    • THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

Well, it is that time of year again......girls basketball season.   The season is starting off strong for some, and a little rocky for others.  It's way too soon to be making predictions, especially on the teams struggling, but of course I'm going to try and throw out a few.  So I ask myself, should I start with the good, the bad, or the ugly?  I think I'll start...

    • JUST A FEW THOUGHTS......TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

Well, the girls basketball season has come to an end.   There were some great highlights and, of course, there were some forgetable moments, as well.  It is both, no doubt, that all the girls will remember.  I have some commentary, or opinions, if you will, regarding basketball and how it pertains to life in general.  Some of this may fall on deaf ear, but I live with teenagers, so I'm use...

    • SO CLOSE, BUT........

The old saying unfortunately is very true......close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.  The St. Thomas More Lady Cavs came out one basket away from a win against Sisseton, losing in overtime 46-45.   Both teams were strong on defense, and very equal in shooting percentages, as well.  It was a game that looked like it might go the Lady Cavs' way, but Sisseton wasn't about to go do...

    • UPSET WIN FOR THE COBBLERS

What an upset!!   Central pulled off a huge win against No. 1 SF Washington in the girls AA State Tournament by the close score of 52-51.   The Cobblers fell behind in the fourth quarter, but were able to pull it together and rally for the win.  They were lead offensively  by Chelsey Biegler.  She appears unstoppable, and plays poised and never panicked. ...

    • STM LADY CAVS GET THE WIN

No. 1 seeded St. Thomas More Lady Cavs may have gotten off the bus a little stiff, but they managed to loosen up by the second half of their game against No. 8 seeded Winner to pull off a 60-53 win.   The Lady Cavs struggled and fell behind at half time by 6 points.  STM didn't look as strong as they usually do defensively in the first half, and were shooting a dis...

    • RC RAIDERS PLAY FOR CONSOLATION

The 7th-place seeded RC Stevens Raiders probably are wishing for a do-over after their defeat last night to the 2nd-place seeded O'Gorman Knights 52-38.  The Knights had no trouble defending both Klapprodt and McCloud, the two powerhouses for the Raiders.  They kept Klapprodt scoreless, and even being double and triple teamed most of the game McCloud still managed to score 11 points.  Howeve...

    • IT'S PLAYOFF TIME

What a night of basketball!  Central and Stevens both pulled out wins last night against Spearfish and Sturgis.  Spearfish kept it close in the first half against the Cobblers.  It definately could have gone either way, as the Spartans beat the Cobblers just last week by two points.  However, Central picked it up the second half and pulled out a big win by beating Spear...

    • STM LADY CAVS MAKE HISTORY......AGAIN!!

WHAT A WIN!!  St. Thomas More makes it to the State A Tournament for the first time in school history, and they did it in a big way tonight, beating Pine Ridge Lady Thorpes 53-37.  It's always exciting watching a game with the stakes a little high, so to speak, and this one didn't disappoint.  The Lady Cavs lead throughout the game, but the Lady Thorpes always scratched their way back. ...

    • RCC-RCS GO AT IT AGAIN......

Another close game between the Central Cobblers and the Stevens Raiders, but with a different outcome.  Stevens managed to pull away with the win, beating the Cobblers 55-53.   It looked as though Central was again going to walk away with another win against the Raiders, but Stevens fought hard and came back to seal the win in the fourth quarter.   Stevens had a couple of players step up i...

    • TOOT TOOT!!

I'm kind of surprised my prediction on the girls basketball Cobbler-Raider game was so accurate.  I bet Cobblers to win by 5 points.  Well, as most of you know by now, the Cobblers won by 6 points, 61-55.  It was a good game and both teams played tough.  The Central Cobblers just had a couple more gals step up and contribute, namely Kruse for Central.  She did an excellent job getting hers...

    • STM LADY CAVS MAKE HISTORY

Congratulations to the STM Lady Cavs for ranking No. 1 in the Class A rankings for the first time in the girls basketball program at St. Thomas More.  It is, of course, well deserved, as they are undefeated so far this season.  They will be without Tessa Pesicka for the remainder of the season, but they have the ability to pick up the lack of her presence in other areas of the ga...

    • CARE TO MAKE A WAGER??

The "Big game" between Rapid City Central Cobblers and the Rapid City Stevens Raiders girls basketball is tomorrow night, and I, along with many others, feel this will be a heck of a game.   I'm going to do something I've never done and throw out my pregame prediction.  Before this last weekend my pick was an easy one.  Now it becomes more difficult. Central is coming off a very exc...

    • JUST A BUMP IN THE ROAD....

The St. Thomas More girls basketball team continues an undefeated season by easily beating Hill City on Thursday and again having a strong win Saturday night against Lead-Deadwood.  Both of those wins were played without starting junior Tessa Pesicka.  The "word on the street" information I received last week wasn't too accurate, as Tessa is out for the season with an ACL and meniscus injury ...

    • STM CONTINUE WINNING WAYS

St. Thomas More is still going strong and playing well.  They are undefeated and handling their competition competently.  The word on the street is Tessa Pesicka hurt her knee this weekend, but it  doesn't sound serious and she should be good and ready to play.  The Lady Cavs will undoubtedly handle their conference foes with ease.  Hopefully they can do the same  ...

    • KEEP ON TRUCKIN........

Rapid City Central and Stevens didn't fare well in their respective games over the weekend.  The Central Cobbler girls had a nice shot at Brandon Valley, but came up just short of a win.  Chelsey Biegler continues to be a strong force for the Cobblers, and Ashton Beaird had a good game, with a game high 15 points.  Central wasn't able to stop the more powerful Yankton team, losin...

    • GO CAVS!!

The St. Thomas More girls have been looking like a team this year.  They are, as I write this, undefeated.  But more importantly, they are all, it appears, playing the roles that suit them best.  That wasn't always the case in years past, so it is nice to see the girls gel and play off their own respective strengths. Caitlin Duffy has always been a consistently strong shooter, and it ...

    • OFFENSE OR DEFENSE?? THAT IS THE QUESTION

Both the Central and Stevens girls basketball teams have had some success in their last few games.  Central was able to knock off Sioux Falls Roosevelt, and did it quite convincingly, but then came back to RC and lost to Sturgis.  Stevens was not lucky on the road to Sioux Falls, but came back home and beat Sturgis in a competitive game this weekend.  As I suspected, when facing a strong t...

    • Raiders Win

Notch another win on the board for the Stevens Raiders, as they took to the road and beat Pierre 70-47 Tuesday night.   The top scorers were no surprise, with Margaret McCloud scoring 24 points and Katie Klapprodt 21.  There was a lot of action for all the Raider bench.  They all got some court time, and many contributed offensively.  Stevens looked good defensively, as...

    • ARE YOU SERIOUS? @#*@*

It was a busy day in the basketball scene last night.   With the LNI games being played at the Civic Center, both Central and Stevens boys and girls playing in and out of RC, the St. Thomas More girls and boys playing in Alliance,  I had my pick of games to watch.  It was a tough decision.  Well, actually I didn't have a choice.......I had to travel to Nebraska for work, so I decided I'd ...

    • HO-HO-HO-HOLY BUCKETS........

Central and Stevens girls are just at the start of their season, but both teams are already showing improvement.  With close wins for both teams on Friday, and then again for the Raiders on Saturday,  they go into the holidays with a little bit more to be thankful for.  The Stevens Raiders had an exciting win on Friday against Huron, winning by two points, 57-55.  Katie Klapprodt p...

    • RUMBLE INDEED

The girls are out of the gates and ready to play!!   St. Thomas More hosted Belle Fourche Tuesday and won fairly handedly in a game that wasn't the prettiest game to watch, but a win nonetheless.  The game was plagued with turnovers and plenty of fouls, but that's to be expected with first-game jitters.  I'm sure the Cavaliers feel fortunate to have Caitlin Duffy back on the court after need...
