Coach Knust gave SDSB the following season preview information:
What is your team outlook for 2011-2012?
Last season we finished the year with a 6-14 record. We lost to Dupree in the 2nd round of Districts. Even though we had no seniors on last year’s team we still lost a few key parts to our team.
We return 7 players from last year’s team. We lost 3 starters but do bring back some key players. I’m hoping that we come around in mid-to-late season and surprise a few teams. We would love to play in the district championship.
We will be small this year with our biggest guy being about 6'1. We will need to use our quickness to our advantage.
Which of your players do you expect to have the most "impact" this year?
Lance Yellow Earrings (sr) is a 3 year letter winner for us who will be our go to guy. He is a very good ball handler, penetrates well, and is a streaky shooter. He averaged 17 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.5 spg, and 3.8apg. He will be our leader and we will look to him to do many good things for us this year.
Carlin Mellette (jr) is a 2 year letter winner and started last year. He averaged 12 ppg, 5.3 rpg and is a very good shooter. Dale Chasing Hawk (sr) is a good defender who will guard the opposing team’s best guard. Teddy Iron Cloud (so) is an energetic defender whose speed can give opposing teams problems. Pat Jordan (so) has grown this offseason and looks to get playing time at guard.
Which teams will be your toughest competition?
We will once again be in the YTC conference. Sully Buttes will be tough as well as Eureka Bowdle in the conference. Other teams on our schedule who will be good are: Solen, Langford, Dupree, and Lower Brule. I look for Dupree to be very tough in our district and Faith to be the team to beat in the region.
The Sioux finished the 2010-2011 season with a record of 4-12.
