BHSU Rodeo: Women's Team Wins Region; Men's Team Qualifies for CNFR

SPEARFISH, S.D. - For the second-straight year, the Black Hills State University rodeo program is sending both its men's and women's teams to the College National Finals Rodeo slated for June 11-17 in Casper, Wyoming.

The women's team ran away with the Great Plains Region Championship, tallying 5,292.83 points to place ahead of South Dakota State who had 3,989.16 points over 10 rodeos.

Aiding in the women's dominance was Samantha Jorgenson as she won the region title in three different events including breakaway roping, an event she leads the nation in. The Watford City, North Dakota, native, won the breakaway roping title with 1,275 points, ahead of fellow teammate Madison Huber with 540 points. Jorgenson also won the All-Around with 2,173 points where she ranks fourth in the nation.

Senior Katie Lensegrav placed second behind Jorgenson in the All-Around with 1,110 points. The final region event Jorgenson was awarded as champion was the team roping as she totaled 582 points as the header.

Black Hills State also received a Great Plains Region Champion in the goat tying as sophomore Carlee Johnston won the event with 1,181.8 points. Lensegrav earned third place in goat tying with 717 points.

Although the men's team did not have a region champion, three student-athletes placed in the top-three of region events including Lane Rossow in the tie-down roping. Rossow placed second with 645 points in the event.

Jake Herman and Colton Backhaus each earned placings in the team roping as Herman earned second place as the header and Backhaus third as a heeler. Herman totaled 500.5 points while Backhaus also had 500.5 points.

With the regular season concluded, the Yellow Jackets now prepare for the CNFR where Huber, Johnston, Jorgenson and Lensegrav will represent the women's team. The men's team will have representation from Backhaus, Herman, Johnston, Rossow and Trey Huber.
