Augustana FB: Vikings fall at No. 5 Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – True freshman quarterback Kyle Saddler tossed three touchdown passes to three different Augustana receivers, and the Vikings defense played tough all day, but Minnesota State won the field position battle, and used that to secure a 42-21 win on Saturday at Blakeslee Stadium.
The No. 5 ranked Mavericks remain undefeated on the season at 6-0, with a 2-0 mark in NSIC South play, while the Vikings fall to 2-4, with an 0-2 record in the south.

Down 18-0 in the second quarter, the Saddler found Trevor DeSchepper for a 43-yard touchdown to get the VIkings on the board. The Mavs answered with a touchdown of their own before the Vikings came right back with a Saddler to Chet Peerenboom touchdown, this one went for 12-yards and cut the Minnesota State lead to 25-14 at halftime.

The lone score of the third quarter came in a Mavericks field goal, but they scored early in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 35-14 lead.

Looking to get back into the game, Michael Kloza blocked a Minnesota State punt, which set the Vikings up with first and goal from the Mavericks seven yard line. Four plays later, on fourth and goal from the four yard line, Saddler hit Jake Welscheimer for the score, cutting the lead to 35-21, but they would not score again, while the Mavericks would add an insurance score later to seal the win.

Saddler finished the day with 14 completions on 38 attempts, with a pair of picks to go with his trio of touchdowns. Welscheimer caught four of those passes for a total of 27 yards and the one score. Both DeSchepper and Brett Shepley caught three passes ,with DeSchepper finishing with a team-high 94 yards and Shepley 67 yards.

Defensively, Kirby Hora led the Vikings defense with 13 tackles, which includes two sacks. John Waters added 11 tackles and Matt Wagner 10, as the Vikings held the Mavericks to 388 total yards, well below their season average of 523 entering the game.

Augustana looks to snap its skid at Saturday, when the Vikings host Southwest Minnesota State on Viking Days, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
