BHSU WBB: Bertram and Erickson lead Jackets to victory

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Rachel Erickson's career-high 26 points paced the Black Hills State women's basketball team to a 73-55 victory over Texas A&M International on Saturday evening.

Rachel Erickson made seven three-pointers in the first half, and finished with 26 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (2-0). The seven made three-pointers by Erickson tied the record for most threes in a single game at BHSU. Keely Bertram recorded her first career double-double, with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Hannah Cass scored 11 points.

The Dust Devils (0-2) scored the first two points, but never led again, as BHSU went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets led, 24-12, and Erickson had made four shots from beyond the arc.

The second quarter was more of the same. The Green and Gold went on a 15-3 run to begin the period, and outscored Texas A&M International, 23-11, in the quarter.

The third quarter was a slog for the Yellow Jackets, with the Dust Devils going to the line 13 times. Despite being outscored, 15-4, BHSU led, 51-38, heading into the final period. With six minutes remaining in the game, BHSU went on a 10-0 run to extend the lead out to 24 points at 70-46. The Yellow Jackets would ultimately win by 18 points, and move to 2-0 on the season, with their 73-55 victory.

BHSU shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-for-58), while TAMUI was 29.2 percent from the floor (14-for-48). The Yellow Jackets were 8-for-24 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Dust Devils were 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) on three-pointers. The Green and Gold held a substantial 40-29 edge in rebounding, and dished out 19 assists, including five from Cortez Standing Bear.

Tantashea Giger led the Dust Devils with 22 points, including 15 from the free throw line, while Passionate Amukamara and Jaden Gonzales each scored 10.

The Green and Gold next travel to Mankato, Minnesota, to take on Minnesota State Mankato on Tuesday, November 14. The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.
