SD Mines Men's Soccer: Barkow Named To the COSIDA Academic All-District First Team

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The accolades keep coming for South Dakota School of Mines men’s soccer sophomore Justin Barkow as the Hardrocker forward was named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® Men’s Soccer First-Team Academic All-District® announced Friday.

The award gives praise to the nation’s top scholar-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Barkow has also earned the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic Athlete of the Year. The Longmont, Colo., native has a 3.9 GPA and finished the season with 10 goals and two assists. He started 15 of 18 games this season and logged 1,381 minutes.

“I love seeing another recognition for Justin,” said Hardrocker men’s soccer head coach Justin Barkow. “He is so ambitious. Speaking with him after this award was announced he was just focused on getting back on the field. Justin’s attitude reflects the way our team has been since our final game, and that is a focus to get ready for the 2018 season. Our expectations and standards are that much higher now and Justin’s award is proof of that.”

With the conclusion of the 2017 season, Barkow --- a Mechanical Engineering major --- hold the school record for most goals in a season and most points in a career (32).

“I'm proud to be a member of the Hardrocker men's soccer program because of the enthusiasm and atmosphere of the team,” Barkow said. “Everyone works hard for each other for the same common goal and I love that I am able to represent my school on the soccer pitch.”

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in December.

The Academic All-District® teams and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

Barkow becomes the first Hardrocker in program history to receive the award.
