USD MBB: South Dakota 76, San Jose State 62

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A career-high 27 points from Tyler Hagedorn and a strong second half carried the South Dakota men’s basketball team to a 76-62 victory Sunday at San Jose State.

The Coyotes improve to 11-3 on the season, their best start in the Division I era. San Jose State falls to 2-8 on the year.

Hagedorn tallied six-made 3-point baskets and went 8-of-16 from the field for the game-high 27 points, leading four Coyotes in double digits. Matt Mooney scored 18 points as Trey Burch-Manning and Carlton Hurst each added 11 points.

Trailing 37-33 at halftime, the Coyotes turned in a second half that saw USD shoot 52 percent from the field after shooting 37 percent in the first half.

The first shot of the second stanza set the tone for the half as Hagedorn sank a 3-point basket sparking the Coyotes.

Minutes later Hurst gave the Coyotes a lead they would not relinquish on a set of free throws. He sank both shots from the charity stripe to give USD a 42-41 lead with 16:57 remaining in the contest.

Utilizing a 12-4 run, that lead increased to nine points at 54-45 with Hagedorn scoring 10-straight points. He scored the final two points of the run on a pair of free throws with 12:50 remaining in the game.

The Spartans clawed within four points with 8:25 remaining in the contest, but the Coyotes put the game out of reach with a 13-2 run. The run ended on Hagedorn’s 27th-point of the night, another 3-point basket with 3:51 remaining. That gave the Coyotes a 15-point advantage at 71-56.

South Dakota then cruised to the final score of 76-62, winning its fourth-straight game.

Brandon Mitchell, playing in his first game of the season for SJSU, scored 17 points while Ryan Welage added 13 points. Keith Fisher tallied 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Coyotes scored 28 points off 22 Spartan turnovers and hit 11 3-point baskets, shooting 50 percent from long range. Mooney hit four treys while Burch-Manning added one. Hurst tallied his 11 points on 2-of-3 shooting and sinking seven free throws. USD picked up its first win against Mountain West opponent since defeating Wyoming on Dec. 1, 2010.

South Dakota closes its three-game West Coast road trip Tuesday at UCLA. The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. (CST) start in Pauley Pavilion and will be shown on Pac-12 Networks.
