    BHSU Rodeo: Yellow Jackets open spring at SDSU

    SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Black Hills State University rodeo teams are set to begin the spring season when they compete at South Dakota State University on Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7.

    The Yellow Jackets will be looking to continue the success they had during the fall season. At the conclusion of the fall, the women's team led the Great Plains Region and are sixth in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association with 2,570.50 points. The team placed first in four rodeos during the fall, while taking second in the fifth. The men are tied for fourth in the Great Plains Region with 1,486 points. They improved with each event as the season went on, eventually winning the final rodeo of the fall.

    Individually, Yellow Jackets hold the top two spots in the women's all-around. Carlee Johnston is first with 1,135 points and also is fourth nationally, while Alyssa Lockhart is second in the region with 840 points. In barrel racing, Lockhart is second in the region with 495 points, while the Green and Gold hold the top three spots in the region for breakaway roping. Carlee Johnston is in first (ninth nationally) with 400 points, Savana Johnston is second with 350.5 points, and Jaydn Hollenbeck is in third with 250 points. Carlee Johnston is also in first place in goat tying in the region with 585 points, while Lockhart is third with 300 points.

    For the men, Colton Backhaus currently sits in third place in the region with 337 points in tie down roping. Carson Johnston currently ranks first in steer wrestling with 370 points, while Jordan Staton is second in team roping header with 225 points. Cedar Jandreau is eighth with 160 points, and Trey Huber is ninth with 152 points in team roping header.

    The South Dakota State University rodeo begins a spring season for the Green and Gold which includes five events. Following this weekend, BHSU will host the Will Lantis Yellow Jacket Stampede on April 13-14.
