USD WBB: Women’s basketball adds two walk-ons for 2018-19

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota women’s basketball head coach Dawn Plitzuweit has added a pair of walk-ons in Courtney Schoenbeck and Taylor Terronez for 2018-19.

Terronez is an in-state standout at Watertown High School, while Schoenbeck comes to Vermillion from Walworth, Wisconsin.

“We are excited about Courtney and Taylor joining our program next season,” said Plitzuweit. “Both of these young ladies were passionate about being at the University of South Dakota as a member of our women’s basketball program. When you combine that desire with their character, high-energy personalities and basketball skill sets, we were thrilled to ask them to join us as walk-ons here at USD. We feel strongly that they will do anything it takes to help us continue to grow our Coyote program.”

Schoenbeck, an all-Rock Valley Conference guard as a senior, led Big Foot High School to a 19-6 record her senior season. Shoenbeck averaged 16.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as the Chiefs finished runner-up in the RVC and advanced to sectional play for the first time in program history. Wisconsin Sports Network named her one of the top-15 defensive players in the state of Wisconsin and she was selected to the 2018 Wisconsin all-star team. She missed her junior season to injury, but was all-RVC as a sophomore and honorable mention her freshman year. Schoenbeck also played volleyball and softball for the Chiefs.

Schoenbeck is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to major in health sciences at South Dakota.

“Courtney was a consummate leader on and off the court for her team at Big Foot High School,” said Plitzuweit. “She led her team further in their playoff history than they have ever advanced and did so by stuffing the stat sheet as well as by being a vocal and inspirational leader for the Chiefs. We are excited to welcome Courtney and her family to our Coyote program!”

Terronez, a native of Watertown, South Dakota, averaged eight points per game with 55 assists, 32 steals and 20 blocks in her senior year for the Arrows. The 5-foot-11 guard was the Arrows’ team captain this past season and a three-time letterwinner at Watertown High School. Terronez was selected to play in the 2018 3-Class Shootout All-Star Game. Former USD standout Tia Hemiller also played for the Watertown Arrows.

Terronez is an academic letterwinner, a member of the National Honor Society and earned the Regents’ Scholar award. She plans to enroll in USD’s nursing program.

“Taylor is the definition of an energizer bunny on and off the court,” said Plitzuweit. “When you meet Taylor, she has an infectious level of enthusiasm and she applies that to her game as well. On the court, she has great length, athleticism and an incredible motor. What is really special about Taylor is that both her parents are USD alumni and her dad, Troy, played for the Coyotes on the hardwood from 1990-94. Taylor can now follow in her dad’s footsteps. We feel like we are welcoming Taylor and her family ‘back home’ to Vermillion!”

The pair joins forwards Allison Peplowski and Regan Sankey in the 2018 class.
