BHSU Athletics: Whelchel and Wientjes named Warriors of the Month

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Black Hills State University awarded its most recent set of Warrior of the Month awards during recent spring events. Taran Whelchel was recognized at halftime of the Spring Football Game, while Remi Wientjes was honored during the Gold Rush.

Taran Whelchel, a native of Wheatland, Wyo., has a 3.21 GPA as a junior exercise science major. He is always one of the first football players to volunteer for any community service, and was named the Special Teams Captain for the BHSU football team in 2017.

He is involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has been involved in visiting the Little Jacket Daycare, has helped with the setup for the Spearfish Gymnastics meets, volunteered to help deliver Christmas trees for Zonta, and has helped with the State Special Olympics for the past two years.

On the field, Whelchel had 15 tackles as a defensive back in the 2017 season, and also forced a fumble.

Remi Wientjes, a junior from Onida, S.D., is an elementary education major who has been named to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll for the third consecutive year. She is a huge part of the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team as well as the BHSU Athletic Department.

She is in her second year as the President of SAAC. She has been involved in Special Olympics, as well as volunteering to teach basketball skills to kids, among other things. She exhibits everything that a student athlete should be on and off the field.

On the court, Wientjes missed the 2016-17 season after undergoing two surgeries. She bounced back in the 2017-18 season, averaging 6.9 points per game while playing 24.8 minutes per game, as BHSU made it to the RMAC Championship game and the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
