USD MBB: Kelley joins men’s basketball team

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota men’s basketball coach Todd Lee is pleased to announce Cody Kelley, who previously spent three seasons with the Wyoming basketball team, will join the Coyotes as a graduate transfer beginning with the 2018-19 season.

Kelley, a 5-foot-11 guard, has two seasons of eligibility after redshirting his first year at Wyoming and graduating with his degree in kinesiology and health in three years.

“Cody is a winner, leader, is tough and contains a high level of intelligence,” Lee said. “He wants to be a coach and he plays like a coach on the floor. One of the biggest things is that he brings the intangibles to our program.

“His role will be expanded from what he was doing at Wyoming and our fans will love watching him play. He is somebody who everybody embraces because of how hard he plays.”

Kelley is a veteran of 67 games at Wyoming, making 24 starts over two seasons. In his sophomore campaign, he made 23 starts averaging 5.2 points, 2.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game while the Pokes tallied a 20-13 record. In his redshirt-freshman season, Kelley was a key spark off the bench helping Wyoming capture the 2017 CBI Championship. He played in 34 games, making one start, averaging 3.4 points per contest.

Prior to his time at UW, Kelley was Wyoming’s only two-time Gatorade Player of the Year while playing for Campbell County High School in Gillette. He earned the accolade as a junior in 2012-13 and followed as a senior in 2013-14. As a senior at Campbell County, he led the Camels to a 25-3 record and the Class 4A state title. He averaged 24.9 points per game, adding 6.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per contest.

In his junior season, Kelley averaged 20 points, 6.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game while helping Campbell County to a 23-4 record and a trip to the state tournament semifinals. He concluded his career as the all-time leader in points, assists and steals at the high school.

Following his high school graduation, he spent a year at Elev8, a prep school in Delray Beach, Florida.

Kelley joins a Coyote basketball team returning four of five starters and seven of its top-10 scorers from last season.
