USD MBB: MBB: Johns commits to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota men’s basketball coach Todd Lee has announced the addition of Matthew Johns, a 6-8 wing from Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Johns comes to USD after spending this past season with the Geelong Supercats of the South East Australian Basketball League. In 23 games in the SEABL, Johns made 45.8 percent of his 3-point attempts.

“Matthew is a good athlete and good defender,” Lee said. “He can guard multiple positions and is an excellent passer.

“He has been playing in the SEABL, which is a very good league in Australia, and has played with some of the best players in Australia over the past few years.”

Johns twice represented Australia in FIBA Championships, first in the 2015 U16 Oceania Championship, claiming the gold medal, and again in 2016, the U17 World Championship. In the World Championship, Johns helped Australia to a seventh-place finish in the 16-team field with his best game coming against Finland, tallying 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

His play earned him a scholarship at the Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he later received an invite to the training camp for the Boomers, the Australian National Team, in July of 2017.

Johns also has stints playing for Victoria Country, averaging 14.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists over seven games in his youth career. He was twice named the Victoria Country Junior Male Athlete of the Year.

Johns joins Cody Kelley as additions for the 2018-19 season.
