SD Mines VB: Rockers Add Former Jamestown Assistant

RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota School of Mines volleyball head coach Lauren Torvi is pleased to announce the addition of new assistant Savannah Cox to the Lady Hardrocker program for the 2018 season.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Savannah to the Hardrocker Family,” Torvi said. “Savannah is one of the bright, young minds in women's volleyball and I am confident she will bring an enormous amount of passion, knowledge and personality to our program.”

Originally from Kannapolis, N.C., Cox comes to Rapid City after serving as a graduate assistant last season for the University of Jamestown Lady Jimmies in Jamestown, N.D.

Cox graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Brevard College (NC) in 2017 and played for the Tornados as a middle blocker in all 137 matches of her collegiate volleyball career. She played at Brevard College during their NCAA Div. II era, where the program competed in the South Atlantic Conference.

Cox holds Brevard College's all-time block assist record and matches played --- as well as a school record in track & field --- and was a four-year starter for the Tornados and earned SAC Honor Roll accolades every semester.

“I am incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to mentor young women through the game of volleyball at SD Mines,” Cox said. “SDSMT feels like home and I am overjoyed at the opportunity to spread my roots on this campus. It is unlike any other university I've seen in the Midwest.”

During her time in Jamestown, Cox was under the direction of veteran coach Jon Hegerle, where, in 2017, The Jimmies advanced to the round-of-16 during the NAIA National Tournament. Cox also had the honor to coach three All-Americans last year.

“Coach Hegerle proved to be an amazing mentor to me and sparked my passion to be a collegiate coach,” Cox said. “As I look forward to joining the Hardrocker program, I can't wait to work towards something special with this driven group of young women. I'd like to thank Lauren Torvi and Hardrocker Athletics for the amazing opportunity to learn and grow at SDSMT.”

Coach Torvi added, “Our scholar athletes will be lucky to have her as a mentor and leader and she will undoubtedly help attract brilliant athletes to our program."
