USD WBB: Seekamp to play with Opals in Four-Nations Tournament

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota alumna Nicole Seekamp is slated to compete with the Australian Opals at a four-nation tournament in China between July 11-22.

Australia will face China, Serbia and Argentina in three games over three days before a rest day separates three rematches over the last three days of the tournament. The fourth-ranked Opals will take on No. 8 Serbia in a rematch of the 2016 Olympic quarterfinal.

Still donning No. 35, Seekamp’s first appearance with the Opals was at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April. Australia took home the gold in the tournament, winning all five games by 40 or more points.

“It is such an honor to be able to represent my country and to be able to play against the best players from around the world,” Seekamp said. “It means all of those years traveling to Adelaide to play and train, missing out on friends’ birthdays and family gatherings, and moving away from home has been worth the sacrifice and is paying off!”

Seekamp will look to impress the national team’s coaching staff ahead of the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup held Sept. 22-30 in Tenerife, Spain.

“I want to make the most of this next opportunity in China,” Seekamp said. “I want to perform well enough to give myself a good chance of making the world championships team!”

The 2016 Summit League Player of the Year, Seekamp graduated second in program history for career points (2,056), assists (628) and steals (265). She led the Coyotes to the program’s first NCAA Tournament in 2014, won the 2016 Women’s National Invitational Tournament and reached the postseason all four years.

Seekamp is a member of the Adelaide Lightning of the WNBL. She enters her second season with the program in 2018-19 after spending her first professional season in Poland.
