USD FB: Coyote trio on preseason all-MVFC defense team

VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior safety Andrew Gray, junior defensive end Darin Greenfield and sophomore punter Brady Schutt were each selected to the preseason all-MVFC defense team announced Wednesday by the league office. Gray and Greenfield, all-MVFC honorees a season ago, are first-team picks while Schutt (pronounced SKUTT), a Valley all-newcomer last year, is a second-team selection.

Gray led the Coyotes with 89 tackles last season including 50 solo, 5.5 for loss and a sack. He set a program record for longest interception return when he took a pick 97 yards for a touchdown in a shutout win against Southern Illinois. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone with 27 seconds left that secured the Coyotes’ first FCS playoff victory, a 38-31 win at Nicholls. Gray finished second on the team with five pass breakups and had one other fumble recovery.

Greenfield was named an all-American by four publications last season after leading the Valley and ranking fifth nationally with 19.5 tackles-for-loss, sixth most in program history. He ranked second in the Valley and 18thnationally with 9.0 sacks, also sixth most in program history. Greenfield finished fifth on the team in tackles with 59 and led the team with 13 quarterback hurries.

Schutt averaged 39.6 yards on 62 punts last season and led the Valley in punts placed inside the 20-yard line with 26. He landed seven inside the 10. His longest punt was 54 yards and the Coyote punt team netted 35.7 yards a boot. Schutt earned MVFC Player of the Week honors following his collegiate debut when he placed all four of his punts inside the 20 in a blowout win at Drake.

South Dakota players report to camp Thursday. The team’s first practice is set for 9:30 a.m. Friday.
