USD MBB: Coyotes announce 2018-19 slate

VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota men’s basketball team has announced its nonconference schedule with highlights including road trips to Kansas, Baylor and Colorado, along with the Bimini Jam taking place in the Bahamas.

The Coyotes face Kansas on Dec. 18 inside hallowed Allen Fieldhouse. Fresh of their 15th Final Four appearance, the Jayhawks are the No. 1 team in the country based on many preseason prognostications.

South Dakota travels to the Baylor Bears on Nov. 27 and the Colorado Buffaloes on Dec. 4. Baylor, one of four teams on the Coyotes’ schedule with postseason experience last season, played in the National Invitation Tournament.

In all, the Coyotes face 10 different conferences in the 13-game nonconference schedule. The entire schedule has 14 games inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

“It is a very challenging nonconference schedule,” head coach Todd Lee said. “We’ve got two Big 12 teams, a Pac-12 team and two Mountain West Conference teams. Our guys will be challenged and it will prepare us for the Summit League.”

After a pair of home contests to open the season, including the season-opener against York on Nov. 7, the Coyotes travel to the Bimini Jam to face High Point, Air Force and UMBC. The jam opens with High Point on Nov. 16.

“High point is coached by Tubby Smith, one of the best coaches in the country,” Lee said. “They have all of their players back, so that will be a challenge. UMBC beat the No. 1 team in the NCAA Tournament by 20 points, so you know how good they are and Air Force plays in the tough Mountain West. This is going to be a tough tournament but it is going to be good for us.”

South Dakota has a home contest against CSU Bakersfield on Dec. 1. The Roadrunners have advanced to postseason action in two out of the last three seasons. In 2016, CSUB played in the NCAA Tournament while moving to the Final Four of the NIT in 2017.

Former Summit League opponent UMKC makes its first appearance inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center on Dec. 8. Both UMKC and CSU Bakersfield are former opponents of Lee in the Western Athletic Conference.

The nonconference road slate concludes with contests at Colorado State (Dec. 16) and the contest at Kansas (Dec. 18).

South Dakota closes the nonconference schedule, and pre-holiday schedule, hosting Southern Mississippi on Dec. 21 inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The 16-game Summit League schedule begins Dec. 28 at North Dakota State with the league’s home opener on Jan. 6 against South Dakota State. The Coyotes make the return trip to Brookings on Feb. 23. The regular season concludes with back-to-back home games, first against NDSU on Feb. 28 then hosting North Dakota on March 2.

The Summit League Tournament is slated for March 9-12 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
