BHSU MBB: Cougar's hot shooting downs Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Fraser Malcolm scored 26 points, but the Black Hills State University men's basketball team fell to Colorado Christian University, 86-83, on Friday evening.

Malcolm led the Yellow Jackets (7-5, 6-2 RMAC) with 26 points, while Stefan Desnica had 11, and Dez Stoudamire and Antonio Capley each added 10 points.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair. BHSU led by six early, with 18 minutes to play in the first half, but the Cougars (3-11, 1-7 RMAC) used a 7-0 run to go up by one point. Neither team was able to gain more than a four-point advantage until a 7-0 run for the Yellow Jackets put the home team up by eight points, 38-30, with just over four minutes to play in the first. The Green and Gold led, 44-38, at the break after 10 lead changes in the first 20 minutes.

CCU opened the second half with two quick buckets to draw within two. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead out to four with 14:17 to play when Patrick Mendes made a bucket. However, the Green and Gold were unable to establish the lead, and the Cougars tied up the game four more times, before eventually taking a six point lead of their own, 75-69, with 7:14 left in the game. BHSU was forced to claw back and took a one point lead with 2:49 to play, but CCU responded with a 5-0 run, and ultimately earned the 86-83 victory.

BHSU shot 58.2 percent from the field (32-for-55), while CCU was 54.8 percent from the floor (34-for-62). The Yellow Jackets were 8-for-18 (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Cougars were 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 11-for-14 (78.6 percent) from the charity stripe, and Colorado Christian was 8-for-10 (80.0 percent) from the free throw line. The Green and Gold were outrebounded, 30-24.

Five Cougars scored in double figures, led by Jeremiah Hanson and Stefan Hackethal, who each put up 19 points.

The Green and Gold will look to bounce back against Regis on January 12. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
