BHSU Rodeo: Program hosts successful Cowboys and Candlelight banquet

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Black Hills State University rodeo team recently held its annual Cowboys and Candlelight Dinner, an evening to thank supporters, to raise funds for scholarships and team expenses, and to induct the newest members of the Rodeo Hall of Fame.

Gordon Shoemaker joined 29 individuals and three teams as the newest inductee to the BHSU Rodeo Hall of Fame. In 1962 Gordon was instrumental in organizing the first ever BHTC College Rodeo. Gordon graduated from Black Hills Teacher College in 1962 and earned a master's degree from the University of Utah in 1968. He taught school in Mountain Home, ID and Spearfish High School. Gordon has been a strong supporter of BHSU throughout his life. Gordon and and his wife Margaret live near Belle Fourche, where he has been involved in ranching, team roping, horse training, and has done custom haying.

Head Coach Glen Lammers is thankful for the support from everyone in and around the Yellow Jacket rodeo program. The team was able to meet its goal of raising $25,000, which will be matched by the BHSU Foundation. "The 2019 Cowboys and Candlelight fundraiser was a great success. We are so thankful to those who attended, made donations, and to the BHSU Foundation for matching the proceeds. The support means so much to myself and our team, and is a huge part of our success."
