BHSU MBB: Jackets add two more for 2019-20

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Black Hills State University head men's basketball coach, Ryan Thompson, has announced the signing of two new additions for the 2019-20 season.

"We obviously had some big shoes to fill in our backcourt with the loses we had to graduation off last year's team. We are thrilled with the recent additions we have made as we believe Markieth and Trey will be able to make an immediate impact to our team next season," said head coach Ryan Thompson. "Both are junior college transfers that come from well-coached and successful programs. In addition to their on-court credentials, these two young men are incredible people that take their academics seriously and will represent our university well."

    Markieth Brown Jr.
Brown is a 6-3 guard from Spokane, Washington. The transfer from Everett Community College averaged 26.1 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, 4.0 assists per game, and 2.0 steals per game his sophomore year. He was named the MVP of the NWAC North Region, helping lead ECC to 14-0 in conference play, which is the most wins in school history. He has scored the most points in Everett Community College history. He was also named to the First Team All-Conference following a freshman year in which he averaged 19.0 ppg.

"With Markieth, we are adding an elite shooter. To put up the numbers he did throughout his two-year career at Everett Community College while leading his team to back-to-back region championships speaks to his ability to deliver. Not only does he shoot the ball as well as anyone we have had here at BHSU, but Markieth also has an excellent feel for the game, a knack for scoring at all levels, and great court vision," said coach Thompson. "As with everyone, there are areas he will need to improve on. However, our coaching staff is elated that he has chosen BHSU over a lot of quality programs and we are very excited to begin working with Markieth next fall."

Markieth is the son of Markieth Brown. He plans to major in business at BHSU.

    Trey Whitley
Whitley, a 6-0 guard, is from Santa Cruz, California. His sophomore season at Cabrillo College, he averaged 17.4 points per game, 1.8 steals per game, 4.3 steals per game, and 2.3 rebounds per game. He was named the MVP of the Coast Conference South Division.

"Trey is a versatile player that is capable of doing everything on the basketball court. He comes from Cabrillo College, a program that has a history of sending student-athletes to the next level that are prepared to succeed. Trey checks all of the boxes with his ability to shoot with range, slash to the basket, make plays for others, and defend at a high level," said coach Thompson. "Furthermore, Trey has a great attitude as he is unselfish, extremely coachable, and has a burning desire to improve on a daily basis. We feel that with Trey we are adding a winner that will contribute on the court, in our locker room, and within our community."

Trey is the son of April Whitley. He plans to major in business.
